O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. Her appearances in commercials before shifting in Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady started her career by modeling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her debut on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included shows for television as well as independent films, among numerous other roles. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC police show NYPD Blue was her character. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary between 1993 and 1996. Each year she was awarded the Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the Drama Series.
