O'Neil, who was in her high-school times when she took part in the auditions, volunteered for the third season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. She was able to advance to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. O'Neil was given high marks from the jury. She suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, as well as the second place. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was made public by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
